​From Rio to Havana

Vibrant Rio de Janeiro - rhythmising Havana: the formation Waves of Bossa dedicates its Latin American programme to these two epicentres of music. 
A breeze of Brazilian samba lets the ‘barquinho’, the little sailing boat, glide along the bay off Rio, the legendary mountain of Rio, the ‘Corcovado’, watches over it and ‘the girl from Ipanema’ sways on the beach. On the Malecón, the promenade of the largest island in the Caribbean, on the other hand, intimate confessions of love are made with ‘tres palabras’, with three words, symbolic flowers such as ‘dos gardenias’ are given and people dance to the melancholy of 20 years, ‘20 años’ of past love. 

The songs of Buena Vista Social Club, Antonio Jobim or João Gilberto resound with the sensuality of the tropics and the affirmation and art of living of Latin America! Both the elegant, seductive bossa nova and sparkling samba from Brazil, as well as the warm, often melancholy bolero from music-mad Cuba, beguiled Latin America from the 1950s onwards. As soon as they were composed, they were also adopted in North American jazz and travelled the world in English versions with Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. 

 

The versatile singer Annina Gieré gives this Latin American music her own flavour and she - also a classically trained singer - sings it with a bright, blooming, sometimes full, sometimes simple voice. The programme includes Portuguese, Spanish and English, a fusion of Latin and jazz. Multi-instrumentalist Adam Taubitz is just as virtuosic and moving with his expressive guitar playing as he is with the unique sound of his jazz trumpet. Both he and Christian Gutfleisch on piano - both world-class jazz musicians - are captivating with their jazz improvisations and solos. And Latino Carlos Becker, who has been familiar with this music since childhood, rhythms the waves of bossa on the cajón, bongos and shake.
