Compagnia Za-Zà

Physical theatre - Commedia dell'arte - Music

Ensemble summertour 2025: Mario Strebel, Annina Gieré, Ivan Georgiev, Matthias Hoby, Samantha Bérubé, Carlos Becker, Stefanie Eugster-Schnell, Christian Seiler

The Compagnia Za-Zà focuses on physical theatre, with a special interest in commedia dell'arte, the original Italian folk theatre. The company currently consists of 7 actors and musicians. Compagnia Za-Zà was founded in 2022 by the Chilean actor and theatre maker Carlos Becker and the singer and actress Annina Gieré. An important part of Za-Zà's work is the combination of theatre, live music and dance as well as diversity of languages (German, Spanish, English, French and Italian). The company also seeks to bridge between depth, poesy and comedy.

In 2024, Za-Zà took over the mobile open-air stage from Stradini Theatre. This stage makes it possible to bring living theatre directly to the people on the town square, schoolyard, factory site or park. Compagnia Za-Zà is currently preparing a summer tour through Switzerland.

2025: Tartuffe by Molière:
Open air on the mobile stage through Switzerland

With the takeover of the mobile stage from Stradini Theater, the company has expanded both in terms of material and personnel, opening up exciting new horizons: With this stage, Compagnia Za-Zà performs in larger cities and smaller mountain villages, bringing theatre directly to the people. So, in a special scenery we want to promote the joy of classical literature and theatre, while at the same time bringing people together and creating moments of community.

With Molière's Tartuffe, Compagnia Za-Zà performs directly under the stars, offering a very special theatre experience...

With Molière's Tartuffe, one of the most performed comedies, we dedicate ourselves to a classic of theatre literature. We want our version to be set in the spirit of the commedia dell'arte, playful, sparkling, lively theatre of movement - lazzi, wit, dance, acrobatics and music. But poetry and dreamlike, quiet and tender moments  also shall waft through Za-Zà's Molière. This Tartuffe shall lead us into a perfumed world of pomp and extravagance, where folly lives next door to ice-cold strategy, where anxious love, honest innocence and courageous confessions are as entangled in wigs as cunning and deceit, where there is a constant wavering between appearance and reality, play and reality.

"Daphne and Apollo", an episode from Greek mythology, has inspired numerous artists over the centuries. The Compagnia Za-Zà now tells the story lively and light-footed in their own and new way in the style of the Commedia dell'arte. "Ninfe, Dèi e Polli" is an interweaving of poetry, wit, wonder and madness: mythological creatures of nymphs, satyrs and gods meet town figures from the world of commedia dell'arte, such as the historically significant, credulous servant Pulcinella, his bold wife Zezza or the miser Pantalone. The protagonist of the play is the nature, especially the woods - home to wondrous creatures - which, as a place of action, becomes a projection screen for desires and dreams. The magic of the forest entices and seduces, inspires mischief and confusion - entirely in the tradition of the Commedia Boschereccia.

This Ovidian Midsummer Night's Dream is also the story of the laurel, namely how a love affair turned the laurel crown into a symbol of political, sporting and academic success. In line with our zeitgeist, the role of women is also significant here: already in ancient mythology it is clear that the woman sees herself as an independent being. To preserve this, nature offers her solution and salvation in "Daphne and Apollo".

"Ninfe, Dèi e Polli" stands in the tradition of the original Italian mask theatre, the street and folk theatre, which has a direct and immediate relationship with the audience and in which each character is defined by its own distinct repertoire of movements and emotions. In addition to the spectacular and technically virtuous body language of commedia dell'arte, other disciplines such as music, singing, dance and acrobatics enrich the play. Ninfe, Dèi e Polli" combines different languages and thus preserves the plurilingual tradition of commedia dell'arte. The Swiss actress and singer Annina Gieré and the Chilean actor and theatre-maker Carlos Becker both interpret several roles, switching from one character to the next on the fly and inspiring the audience's imagination so that a whole crowd seems to take over the stage.

Annina Gieré and Carlos Becker trained with Maestro Antonio Fava and work alongside him for several years, for example in his opera "L'Istriona" or his pulcinellata "Pulcinella ammutolito". He is one of the most celebrated exponents of commedia dell'arte and his mask making is considered a worldwide reference for leather masks. In "Ninfe, Dèi e Polli" his masks are being used, and he also directed and composed the music.

Let yourself get carried away into the fantastic forest of nymphs, gods and gullibles...

English short stories by Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe and others - in the style of bande mimée

The Bande mimée - "mimed dipiction" - is a dynamic, witty and creative style of physical theatre and is characterised by language very similar to film. Not only people but also objects, architecture and elements are physically represented. The actors thus embody figures on the one hand, and on the other hand they are the scenery, while the images are created solely in the play by the moving actors. The bande mimée uses all film techniques such as close-up, wide angle, flashback, acceleration or ellipsis.
